Rising from the depths of the open sea, Elphinstone Reef is a world-renowned dive site that offers a thrilling blend of dramatic underwater landscapes and high-adrenaline encounters with marine life. This slender, cigar-shaped reef stretches roughly 300 meters in length and is famed for its sheer drop-offs, vibrant coral walls, and strong currents — making it a magnet for pelagic species.

The journey to Elphinstone takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes by speedboat from Marsa Alam, making it a favorite for early-morning excursions packed with excitement and adventure.

Drift diving along the east or west wall reveals dense soft coral gardens, gorgonian fans, and schools of anthias swirling in the blue. But the real magic happens when you venture toward the north and south plateaus. These current-swept zones are prime territory for spotting oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus), particularly from late autumn through spring. Hammerheads and other large pelagic are also occasional visitors, especially in deeper blue water.

Diver Tip: 

Due to unpredictable currents and depths, Elphinstone is best suited for experienced divers. Morning dives offer the best chance to see sharks patrolling the plateaus, especially during the cooler months.
